I worked for years in the nonprofit sector as a program manager providing services for youth in underserved communities.
I saw and felt the dynamics of intellectually, emotionally and socially demanding work that can drain your capacity over time if not managed well. I completely burned out of a nonprofit role when I was in my 20s, which caused me to develop severe anxiety and chronic fatigue. At the height of my burnout, I couldn't go to the grocery store without being reduced to tears, and I was stuck sleeping an additional six hours a day after a full night's rest. I couldn't hold a job for five years. Eventually I found a coach who helped me recover. |
After my burnout, I began working in the prevention field of the public health sector, and I saw the gap that exists in addressing burnout because it's not officially classified as a medical diagnosis or mental health problem.
The principles of prevention science are universal to preventing a variety of health and behavior problems. I made it my mission to bring those principles to the burnout prevention space so that those who are struggling with it can get the support they need to avoid ending up with the long-term consequences of complete burnout.

Unlike my clients, I had no one to help me prevent a burnout experience that lost me several years of career capital and caused a variety of extended mental and physical health problems.

In 2010, I wrote out a personal mission statement for my life: "To have a positive and significant impact on the development of the people of the world." I took an extended detour from that mission when I was taken out by burnout. I've returned to my mission. Now let me help you complete yours. |
